Mailbox or Mailslot
A means of importing discs to, or exporting discs from, a library. It is usually a slot or tray on the front of the library. The way the mailbox works varies from library to library, and some libraries may not have one at all.
MO (Magneto Optical)
A disc using optical technology for data storage. A laser is used to heat up a spot on the recording layer to the temperature at which the magnetic polarity of that spot can be changed to the required state by using a magnetic field. This change can be read by a lower powered laser as the polarity of the laser is altered by the stored magnetic field. This technology can be used to rewrite a piece of media many times, typically 10 to 100 million overwrites.
Mode
A way of recording CDs. Pre-written CD-ROMs use Mode 1. Multi-session CD-ROMs usually use Mode 2 (actually Mode 2 XA Form 1; Form 2 is used for other types of data, e.g. video).
Multi-session
A CD containing more than one session, or a CD player with the ability to recognize such CDs.
Multi-session ISO-9660
A way of adding files to an existing CD-ROM, so that each new session includes files from the previous session. With a multi-session ISO9660 disc you only ever need to directly access the last session on the disc.
